The Friends of the Battle River Railway are thrilled with the success of our four Canada 150 excursions.
August 12 and August 13 were called Old Time Market Days. We were able to bring over 150 people to enjoy Forestburg’s Canada 150 celebration. We were also able to bring the Maskwacis Performers and Beth Portman and the Good Find Band to the Village for the enjoyment of all. Our passengers enjoyed a gourmet picnic lunch supplied by Forestburg’s very own, Darcy Jahns Catering. Special thanks to the hard work of Jody Pettigrew in coordinating so well with our group and thanks to the Village of Forestburg for putting on such a top notch weekend.
On August 19, we hosted a Family Fun Excursion. Ticket prices were kept very low to accommodate our families. We travelled from Forestburg to Heisler, enjoyed old fashioned games at the Heisler Ball Diamonds, went to the Rec Centre for bowling, face painting, an old time photo booth and an amazing snack prepared by the Heisler Hotel. We were able to sponsor 30 people who are members of foster families in our area. We were very privileged to be able to give back to these families who don’t have the funds to participate in activities such as this very often.
August 20 brought the Great Battle River Train Robbery. This run started in Alliance, was held up at gun point in Galahad and then travelled onto Heisler for an amazing meal at the Heisler Hotel. The passengers all travelled home with full bellies and empty pockets. Special thanks to Caroline Boddy and the rest of her notorious Gopher Gang for such a great job holding up the train.
The Friends of the Battle River Railways are so happy to have been able to add to our fleet an Open Air Car. Hundreds of volunteer hours went into this project and the outcome is fantastic. Our passengers are now able to move freely from our passenger car to the open air car to our caboose.
We hosted people from England, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and all points in Alberta.
All of this excitement would not be possible without the many, many volunteer hours of our Board. These four runs took a lot of work and our Board handled it like pros. If anyone is interested in becoming involved, we would love to have you. Come join the fun.
